A Plant Lovers Journey to the Patagonia

Argentina and Chile

March 1 to 12, 2011

Patagonia!! A place of vast and stunning vistas and wild untamed beauty.... An amazing diversity of climates and plants spanning the stark desert beauty to the highest Andes snow capped peaks, pristine glaciers to virgin forests. Our Plant Lovers journey to Patagonia has been designed to immerse oneself in the magic and power of this unique region of the earth.

Patagonia is not only one of the richest regions of the world in the biodiversity of plants, it is also rich in plant experts...naturalists, biologists, botanists, herbalists, ethnobotanists, agronomists live here to study, research and teach. We will have presentations and walks in the wild with people who will identify the medicinal, edible and useful plants of the region: endemic, indigenous and exotic. We will interact with the local indigenous people, the Mapuche and Huelches, to connect to the most ancient wisdom of our ancestors regarding useful plants and earth ceremonies.

Trip Highlights Include ~

We’ll experience the delicious food of the regions (both vegetarian and omnivore cuisine will be available), the exceptional wines, local produce and cheeses, participate in a traditional Yerba Mate ceremony, meet local herbalists, farmers, and naturalists, go on a number of stunning hikes and plant walks, fish in the Lake Nahual Huapi, soak in natural hot mineral pools, visit local markets and small towns, and experience the rich culture and exceptional beauty of the region.

Please note: There will be lots of outdoor activities on this trip, so it’s important that our participants be fit and active.

A few of the places we will visit on our Journey ~

Pargue Nacional Nahuel Haupi ~ Argentina's oldest national park, PargueNacional Nahuel Haupi contains over 50% of all the species found in the vast Patagonia.

San Carlos de Bariloche ~ Set against the stunning back drop of the Andes Mountains and verdant rainforests, San Carlos de Bariloche lies on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi.  The town is a rich and exciting blend of South American and European architecture, food and culture.  In Bariloche, ¨the Switzerland¨ of South America, fragrant roses are blooming everywhere, rose hips and lavender grow profusely and are made into popular cuisine and health/ beauty products. The tradition of making fine chocolates was brought to Bariloche by the Swiss, Germans and Austrians who emigrated there 100 years ago. Here museums, shopping, chocolate factories and fine eateries abound.

Lake Nahuel Huapi ~ 70 miles long and over 1400 feet deep, Lake Nahuel Huapi is crystal clear, fed by glacial melt, reflecting the Andes Mountains with long stretches of sandy beaches. We will travel to places on Lake Nahual Huapi that are true wilderness, reachable only by boat, where rivers cascade into the lake creating multiple waterfalls and pools. Our guide on the lake, native Argentinean and fisherman extraordinaire Captain Juan Waroquiers tells us that he has fished all over the world and has come home to “the best possible place to fish”. For the fishermen/women amongst us, there will be ample opportunity to fish and eat our fresh catch prepared over the grill, Argentine style.

The Arrayanes Forest ~ This forest is a "one of a kind place in the world." The Arrayan trees, a type of myrtle, are found growing only in this part of the world and comprise a dense forest with trees as old as six and seven hundred years old. The unusual bark of the Arrayanes trees looks like it’s been colorfully painted with African designs of zebras, leopards and modern art in deep orange, cinnamon, and white.  There are giant redwood type trees here as well that we will visit.

Pilcaneyeu Desert ~ We will leave the high mountains and travel to the La Buitreara (Rocks with Condors) in the Pilcaneyeau Desert. These sculpted, unique rock outcroppings are the nesting and mating ground for golden eagles and condors. To witness their flight is one of pure awe and delight. It is here you will see large narrow and often needle like rocks called Le Dedo de Dios – The Finger of God. We’ll also visit Los Juncos- a unique water conservation area and wildlife refuge where flamingos, ducks, swans and otters live.

El Bolson ~ In this quaint rustic town where guachos (cowboys) ride the dirt roads nearby, we will visit a medicinal herb farm, meet a local herbalist, hike to a spectacular scenic vista and shop at the local market where the artisans and farmers of the region bring their handicrafts, homemade food and garden produce to sell.

Victoria Island ~ In the remote past, native communities that lived here left their marks in the form of cave paintings on Victoria Island. The leafy trails that cross Victoria lead the visitors to the giant sequoias, thujas, eucalyptus, pines, oaks and cypresses.

El Manso ~ This is a lush Valdivian forest (temperate rain forest), with towering trees, virgin forests, diverse plant life, rivers and waterfalls. While staying in this region, participants will have the opportunity for optional activities such as white water rafting and horseback riding in this beautiful area.

Chile ~ The Pargue Nacional Puyehue will be our home base while in Chile. The park is situated in an extraordinarily beautiful zone in the Lakes Region of Chile and boasts a stunning and diverse landscape.  Surrounded by the Andes foothills and mountains, with volcanoes within its territory, and with incredible natural thermal waters, it is considered among the most beautifully scenic areas of Chile.  Hikes, plant walks, visits to small rustic towns, meeting with locals herbalists and plant lovers, tasting the wine and great food of the region and the divine experience of soaking in natural hot mineral pools surrounded by mountain peaks will all be part of our rich Chilean experience.

Lodging ~

In San Carlos de Bariloche we will stay at the elegant Puerto Pireo cabins which are nestled on Lake Nahuel Huapi... “in harmony with nature to provide guest peace and quiet and a privileged landscape”. This small resort has private cabins that are quiet, light and beautifully decorated and constructed of native woods. Lush flower and herb gardens wind through the property.  There is a beautiful large heated indoor swimming pool with sliding glass ceiling and extraordinary lake view, jacuzzi, gym and sauna.  In Chile we will be staying in or near the Pargue Nacional Puyehue in the beautiful scenery near the Agua Caliente Sectore of the park which allows us ready access to the hot thermal pools and a number of exceptional hiking trails.

Facilitators & Presenters on the Journey Include ~

Rosemary Gladstar ~ Author of numerous herb books including Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health, co-founder of Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center and President of United Plant Savers. Rosemary has been a practicing herbalist for over two decades and brings a deep passion and joy to her work.

Robert Chartier ~ Robert is the Earth Steward at Sage Mountain, a professional photographer and world traveler.

Dr. Richard Liebmann ~ Doctor of Naturopathy and former Executive Director of United Plant Savers, Richard is a world traveler and has a deep love of the earth and its diverse cultures.

Professor Eduardo Rapoport ~ Recently retired from the National University of Camhue located in Bariloche, Professor Rapoport has published many books on edible wild plants. Professor Rapoport, one of the foremost experts in the world on wild edible plants, will join us for part of the trip and honor us with his wisdom.
